Sr. Mary Anna Evers was born at home in Verboort, Oregon on April 20, 1919, and died on January 27, 2013, at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. She attended Visitation Elementary Schools and Forest Grove Union High School. When her mother died, Sr. Anna took charge of the family household until she entered the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in 1940.
Sister Anna earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Marylhurst College in 1952 and a Master of Science in Education in 1971. She taught mostly primary children in various elementary schools for 53 years before retiring at the Motherhouse in 1994. Her ministry brought her to various schools in Oregon including St. Stephen’s, Holy Cross, St. Agatha’s St. Pius X and St. Andrew’s in Portland; Visitation in Verboort; St. Francis in Roy; St Boniface in Sublimity; Sacred Heart in Gervais; and St. John’s, Milwaukie. She also taught at St. Peter’s in Spokane.
Sister Anna had short stints (1 – 3 years) in these locations with the exception of Visitation and
St. Pius X Schools. She was quick to see these new assignments as the will of God for her. Nonetheless, she left her mark on the lives of many. She was particularly proud of the students who became priests: Fr. Karl Schray, Fr. Bruce Brown, Fr. Kelly Vandehey, and Fr. Paul Grubb, SJ.
Besides being a beloved teacher, Sr. Anna was a gifted quilt maker and sewed more than 100 quilts of various sizes. She hand-quilted many of these treasured creations. Sister Anna had a joyful spirit and was delighted by the teasing about her monthly “retreat” with her sisters and other friends where there was a lot of card playing!
She is preceded in death by her brothers Ernest P. Evers, Robert J. Evers, Francis Evers, Willis Evers and her sisters Lucille Kempen and Barbara Jean Meeuwsen. She is survived by her sisters Margaret Landauer and Janice Spath.
