James D. Givnan Jr., devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, known as Pops and Papa to his family, passed away June 15, 2021. “Jim” was born Aug. 2, 1930 in Seattle, WA, the second of three children to James D. and Lura M. Givnan; he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Theodora M. Doucet, and is survived by his four children, Tanner Givnan, Theresa Foulon (Robert), Martha Raschio (Greg) and Julie Ramil (Gil), 10 grandchildren (James, Stephen, Mike and Nick Ramil; Liza Womac and Patrick and Matthew Foulon; Peter, Jeffrey and Douglas Raschio) and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jim grew up in the Portland neighborhood of Eastmoreland, attended Duniway Elementary School, Central Catholic High School, the University of Oregon and the University of Portland. He served in the U.S. Air Force, where he attained the rank of captain and flew C-130 aircraft. Jim worked as for The Boeing Co. in Seattle before establishing a practice as a patent agent, with offices in Portland and Eugene, for many years.
Jim lived for more than 50 years in the Sunset Heights neighborhood of Southwest Portland, where he knew no greater joy than the time spent with “Teddy”, the “kids” and grandchildren. He loved travel, particularly to the San Juans, but, ever one to see the bright side of life, was just as happy with the simple things, in recent years a walk around the block with his loyal dog Doodles.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, followed by burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Donations in Jim’s name may be made to The University of Portland.
