Howard Ralph Klug, 87, of Beaverton, Ore. passed away with family at his side on July 15, 2015. He was born in Corvallis, Ore. on Sept. 1, 1927 to Ralph and Louise Klug. The family moved to Portland in 1939. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Victor and sister Phyllis.
Howard is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Cece; son Steve (and Shelly) of Wilderville; daughter Kathie (and Bruce) of West Linn; daughter Debby (and Grayden) of Tigard; grandchildren Mackenzie, Lance, Anna and Dylan; and brother Mark (and Janet) of Escondido, Calif.
Howard graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1944 and joined the U.S. Navy the day after his 17th birthday. After boot camp in Farragut, Idaho he served aboard two light cruisers, the USS Pasadena and USS Duluth. During this time these ships were part of the Pacific Fleet and saw extensive duty in the South Pacific. While aboard the Pasadena they were part of the occupation forces in Japan. While aboard the Duluth they served extensively in China, the South China Sea and Korea.
Howard was discharged from the Navy as Petty Officer 3rd class in September, 1948 and began a six-year apprenticeship in bookbinding at Davis & Holman Company. He worked as a bookbinder at Price and Company for four years, two years at Multnomah County Library Association and 36 years at Lincoln & Allen Company where he became part owner until his retirement in July, 1992.
After his retirement Howard was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award by the Portland Club of Printing House Craftsman, an award given in honor of contributions made to the printing industry.
Hobbies and interests included ballroom dancing with Cece, traveling, gardening, light woodworking, camping, fishing and hunting.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, August 30 at Beaverton Lodge, 12900 SW 9th St., Beaverton, OR 97005. In lieu of flowers, donations in Howard’s memory can be made to VFW Oregon Headquarters, 12440 NE Halsey St., Portland, OR 97230-1927, attention: community service.
