Edna Dorine Breeding was born on June 13th 1910 to Lelah Belle Davis and Charles Henderson Breeding on a little rented farm in McMinnville, Oregon. She was the eldest of four children, with two brothers and a sister. She had a happy childhood, knowing that she was loved and cared for. This gave her confidence all along her life’s path, which was defined by a passion for learning and a long and satisfying teaching career. She graduated from McMinnville High School at age 16. She started her adult life a little bit naïve and she carried that innocence and trust throughout her life. Right after being crowned May Queen at Linfield College, Edna was handed a teaching contract. She dedicated herself to learning whatever was needed to be successful, and learning with joy. After retirement at 62, Edna enjoyed extensive travel and took trips exploring Europe and the Holy Land.
Along with her rich and varied careers in teaching and accounting, Edna had a loving marriage with Chester Britten, with whom she raised their son Chet. Chet and his wife, Marie, have two daughters whom Edna, at age 75, came to Beaverton to help raise. Edna loved spending time with the family and was quickly brought into the fold of Marie’s large family. Edna played an integral part in the daily lives of her grandchildren and at family gatherings. At age 80, she bought her home at The Highlands, bought her first computer, and learned to play bridge which became a passion. Even at age 101, she was still playing and learning more about the game. Edna enjoyed working with numbers, investing, and keeping close track of her accounts. For 20 years, she enjoyed a community of close friends at The Highlands, which she kept after she moved to Hearthstone in 2010. She loved her final two years at Hearthstone, nourishing even more close friendships.
Edna’s long and happy life is a story of optimism. Through blessings and difficulties, she always looked for opportunities to learn and to teach others, and to simply enjoy life’s journey. Edna was a carefree and delightful person who counted each day as a blessing. Her enthusiasm for life was abundant and she shared it with everyone she met. She will remain in all of our hearts.
