Bernie was the 4th child of 9 children born to his parents Ladislau and Branca. Born in Hong Kong as a British Colonial citizen of Macanese/Portuguese descent, Bernie spoke English at school, Portuguese at home and Cantonese in the streets. He spent his youth playing ping pong and baseball, running bets for horseracing, and being a boy scout. In the 1950’s he immigrated with his closest friend, Joe DeGraca to Los Angeles where he worked and attended UCLA. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Mathematics in 1962 and married Dina Noe in 1964. He worked at Northrup till he retired in 1988. They were happily married for the rest of his life.
Bernie read voraciously. He enjoyed classic literature, opera, poems, humorous tales, and philosophy. Hardy, Vonnegut, Twain, Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan were some of his favorite artists. He credited his statistical mind for giving him an advantage in betting on horse racing. He was a self-taught avid golfer and his son, grandsons, and many friends were witness to his spirited golf antics. He enjoyed traveling with Dina, running, and walking multiple marathons, and a good whiskey with friends.
Bernie is preceded in death by his beloved wife Dina and survived by his children, Charles DaSilva and Anna Heinrich and his grandchildren, Steven, Joseph, Michael, and Alex.
