Alice was born in Gilman, Illinois to Henry and Amanda Schleef, and married Don Markwalder in 1952.
She graduated from Illinois State University, and received a PHD from the University of Georgia. She was a practicing CPA and taught accounting at the
University of Portland, retiring in 1996.
Alice loved traveling and spending time with her family and friends throughtout the country. She especially enjoyed the National Parks and the unique
beauty of the Northwest and Portland area. In addition to travel Alice enjoyed gardening, flowers, and collecting(lighthouses, and antique reamers/juicers).
She was active in Trinity Lutheran Church with the quilters, coordinating the Sunday readers, and teaching Crossways. Alice was also active in the Good Shepherd
Auxilliary, most recently serving as the Oregon Unit president. Of special enjoyment to Alice was spending time with the retired faculty group from the University
of Portland and their monthly activities.
In addition to her husband, Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her son Alan, and sisters Barbara and Carol. She is survived by her son Jay and his
wife Jeri, grandchildren Conrad and Claire; brothers Art and Harry; numerous nephews, nieces, and extended family members; all of whom are comforted and
inspired by their memories of her.
