He was born in Port Arthur and was raised in Groves. He lived in Nederland for a short time then became a longtime resident of Port Neches. Louis attended St. Elizabeth Catholic School in Port Neches from 1st-6th grades, and then Groves Junior High. He is a 1955 graduate of Port Neches-Groves High School. He was a team member of the PN-G 1953 State Championship football team and the 1954 State Finalist football team. Louis is a 1960 graduate of Lamar, Beaumont. He was a mechanical engineer with Neches Butane, Texaco Chemical Company and Huntsman Chemical Company in Port Neches. Louis was a longtime member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Port Neches and taught C.C.D classes. For a short time, he was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Groves and was a Minister of the Eucharist. Louis was good at and enjoyed many things including working cattle on the Hebert Ranch with his brother, Morris Matthews; helping his neighbors and friends; spending quality time with his family and playing golf! He was a fiercely loyal fan of the PN-G Indians and Lamar Cardinals.
Louis is preceded in death by his grandparents, Anon Asbury Matthews, Sr. and Mary Emma Heinen Matthews, Louis Martin Hebert Sr. and Sarah Ann "Sadie" O'Connell Hebert; parents, Morris Andrew Matthews, Sr. and Ione Hebert Matthews; sisters, Anne Marie Covington, Yvonne Matthews; cousin (brother at heart) Jetherine J. Jordan Jr. (Junior); nephew, Mark Matthews; niece, Rene' Matthews.
Louis is survived by his loving wife, Loretta Matthews; sons, Louis M. Matthews, Jr and wife, Sharon of Beaumont, Lenny Matthews and wife, Danette of Conroe, and Larry Matthews and wife, Susan of Kingwood; daughter, Laurie Matthews of Port Neches; brother, Morris Matthews, Jr and wife, Billie of Warren, TX.; grandchildren, A.J. Matthews and wife, Casey, Meagan Mitchell and husband, Derrick, McKenzie Matthews, Collin Matthews, Josh Matthews and wife, Kira, and Sarah Yeldell and husband, Clay; great grandchildren, Maddison Matthews, Claire Matthews, Ryan Matthews, Luke Matthews, Jack Matthews, Troy Yeldell, and Sloan Yeldell.
