Harry was born on February 5, 1936 in Beaumont. The son of Harry B. Mason, Sr. and Beulah Cooper Mason, his first home was in the north end, where he spent many happy hours getting into all sorts of mild mischief.
Although he was an only child, he was very close with his cousins and extended family, with whom he enjoyed many vacations and celebrations during his youth.
In another life, he likely would have been a game warden. He loved hunting, fishing, and being outdoors.
A proud Greenie, Harry was the 1954 class president at South Park High School. He would later serve as a member of the South Park School Board.
Harry earned a degree in pharmacy from the University of Houston and proudly served in the Marine Corps Reserves.
Harry met his future wife, Mary Theresa Nelson, on a blind date. They had three daughters and remained married until her death in 2022. He was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer and singing in the choir.
Harry is perhaps best known as the owner of Highland Avenue Pharmacy, which he took over from his father in the 1980s. He loved serving the community and delighted in his conversations with the unique neighborhood characters.
Harry is survived by his daughters Sharon (Gary) McLendon, Phyllis (Simon) Hunter, and Erin (Derek Lemons) Mason. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Blake (Jeremy) Hayes, Hannah (Joshua) Shell, Maxwell Hunter, Rebecca Hunter, Charles Hunter, and Thora Mason-Lemons as well as a great-granddaughter, Shiloh Shell. A great-grandson, Adam Hayes, is due to arrive in November.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Harbor Hospice, Bonne Vie, the Medical Center of Southeast Texas, and Pathfinder Home Health. Special thanks go out to Mary Cane, his dedicated caregiver for many years.
If you would like to make a donation in his memory, the family suggests Nutrition & Services for Seniors of Beaumont whose Meals on Wheels program provided him social nourishment in addition to lunches.
A celebration of life will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home on Monday, September 30th. The reception will begin at 2PM with a service at 3PM.
