Rufus "Slim" Caruthers, 80, of Gary, Indiana made his peaceful transition on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Slim was born in West Point, Mississippi to Idella and Rufus Caruthers, Sr. and lived most of his life in Gary, Indiana. He touched so many lives as a wonderful son, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
At the age of 17, Slim began working for the United States Steel Corporation in Gary, Indiana. After being drafted into the United States Air Force from January 5, 1953 to January 11, 1957, he served with the Military Police at George AFB, California. He returned to U. S. Steel and retired as a Turn Foreman, in 1979 after suffering a massive heart attack.
Slim was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Gary, Indiana and assisted with the Children's Breakfast Ministry and shared his "expertise" in a supervisory capacity on many projects at Trinity United. Slim, with meticulous detail, was always available to give advice to family and friends on every subject imaginable.
Slim was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dorsey and Booker Caruthers. He leaves to cherish his memory brothers; James (Willie) Caruthers, E. Chicago, Indiana and Leonard (Marilyn) Caruthers, Merrillville, Indiana. Slim is also survived by three children; Anthony Caruthers, Gary, Indiana; Dr. Lori Caruthers-Collins, Beaumont, California and Michelle (Carl) Jones, Highland, California; six grandchildren Carlton Jr., Chase and Lindsay Collins; Anthony Caruthers, II; Shenita (Mark) Stevenson and Michael Jones; two great-grandchildren Dominic and Jaselle Stevenson, and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation Tuesday, June 2, 2015, from 10:00am to 11:00am, followed by the funeral service at 11:00am, both at Weaver Mortuary, 1177 Beaumont Avenue, Beaumont, California. Interment will follow at 2:00pm, at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd, Riverside, California.
