Richard was born in Sandusky, Ohio, June 26, 1922. He married Elinor Dixon on June 17, 1944. They had two sons, Glen (Diane) and Dan (Patty Nolte). His wife preceded him in death in February, 2005.
In addition to his sons, he is survived by five grandchildren: Katrina Ohlemacher, Scott (Gemma) Ohlemacher, Valerie (Jamie) Umans, Danielle Ohlemacher (Tevariz Moore]) and Stephanie Ohlemacher. The mothers of his grandchildren, Kahlene Chambers Stotts and Mary Poniktera, remained close to his heart. A man known for his dedication to his loved ones, Richard was deeply devoted to Kathleen “Kiddy” Dawson for the six years prior to his death, calling her faithfully at the same time each day.
Richard graduated from The Ohio State University and later served two years as an officer in the Navy which included the end of World War II. Most of his later career was spent in various aerospace industries, and he eventually retired from Hughes Aircraft.
After his retirement, Richard and his wife were among the founding residents of Sun Lakes retirement community in Banning. He was active on the board of directors of Lakeside Condominiums for many years. Although he lived at a beautiful country club, Richard’s first loves were boating and RV travel. He and his wife sometimes spent as few as three months a year at home. His other hobbies included playing cards, especially 3-13 and Five Hundred. He also enjoyed bowling and belonged to the Over 80s Club.
While living in New Mexico as a young man, Richard built his and Elinor’s first home himself. He also built his first boat on his own. He loved to travel and had planned several major trips in 2013. He was well-loved and a great gentleman. He will be deeply missed.
A Service of Remembrance will be held Monday, February 25, 2013, at 10:00am, at Weaver Mortuary, 1177 Beaumont Avenue, Beaumont, California. Graveside services will follow at Riverside National Cemetery, staging area #6, 22495 Van Buren Blvd, Riverside, California at 12:30pm with Military Honors by the U. S. Navy.
