

Philip V. Schember, Sr., born “Filippo Schembri” January 03, 1933 in Akron, Ohio; deceased July 31, 2012 in Banning, California. He is the sixth of seven children of Sicilian immigrants Giacomo and Carmela Schembri. Phil was the first in his generation to graduate from college, a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Akron University in 1955. He was the starting tackle for the Akron University Zips Football team, where he earned the Henry Doc Smith Award for Outstanding Senior. He commenced work as an accountant at Firestone Tire & Rubber. He relocated to California in 1963 where he enjoyed a 30 year career in sales and sales management in the industrial refrigeration market. Upon retirement Phil relocated to the Sun Lakes community in Banning, California.
Representative of his charisma and commitment to community, Phil served as President of Bellflower Pop Warner Football, President of the St. John Bosco High School Mens’ Club, President of the Sun Lakes Mens’ Golf Club, President of the Sun Lakes Architectural Committee, and member of the Viva La Panza Club. Family always came first with Phil playing the role of provider, protector and mentor that transcended multiple generations. He was a proud supporter of his children’s endeavors, and his voice will forever echo through the football stadium at St. John Bosco High School. He was a trusted and reliable friend who enjoyed golf, poker and cigars with friends from each era of his life. Travel with family and friends, most notably in Italy and Sicily, stand out among his most treasured memories. Nothing brought more joy to Phil than time with his grandchildren to whom he offered inspiration, many laughs and unconditional love.
Phil is preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Rose Marie Galizio Schember. He is preceded in death by brothers Jasper and Joseph Schember, and sisters Ruth Mandina, Kate and Pat Schember. He is preceded in death by son Jack Schember. Phil is survived by his loving companion, Lilo Taylor. He is survived by his sister, Nina Altieri, as well as sister-in-law Jennie and Elna Schember. He is survived by sons Larry, Christopher, Anthony and Philip Schember; daughters Mary DeRuyter and Nina Escandon, and daughter-in-law Cathryn Schember. Phil has ten grandchildren.
A vigil and rosary will be conducted Sunday, August 5, 2012 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at Weaver Mortuary and Crematory, 1177 Beaumont Avenue, Beaumont, California. Memorial Services and Mass will be conducted on Monday, August 6, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the chapel of St. John Bosco High School, 13640 Bellflower Boulevard, Bellflower, California. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. John Bosco High School in Phil’s name.
