Agnes Coomes, age 86, passed away peacefully in her sleep and entered into eternal glory on May 7, 2021. She was born April 13, 1935 to Emmet and Onie Slayton of Minturn, Arkansas. She married Jay Coomes Sr. in June of 1958, who preceded her in death in 2014. She was also preceded in death by her first-born, Debra Coomes, her parents, her brother, Billy Slayton and her sister, Wanda O’Dell.
Agnes graduated from Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, Tennessee in 1958. After she and Jay married, they moved to San Diego, California, where they raised a family of five children and lived there until they retired.
Agnes worked as an RN for over 32 years. She worked at Clairemont Community Hospital where she became the night Hospital Supervisor until the hospital closed. She then worked at Mission Bay Hospital until retiring in 1991. She and Jay then moved to Sun Lakes Country Club in Banning, California, where they both enjoyed their retirement.
Agnes loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ more than anything in the world, but her family came a close second. Her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were so very important to her. She also loved everyone she knew and met. Her life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32 — “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”
Agnes is survived by her children - Jay Coomes Jr., David Coomes, Laura Pekny, Sharon Robinson and Michele Kendall. She is also survived by her brothers, Emmet Slayton Jr. And Bobby Slayton. Also many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
Agnes was loved by all who knew her. She always exhibited the love of Jesus to those around her as well as being a mighty Prayer Warrior. She will be greatly missed by all.
