In the beauty of springtime on March 26, 1938, on the beautiful island of Trinidad and Tobago, was our dearly beloved Yvonne Josephine Haynes born to Enos Joseph and Boochoon Halloman. She attended public schools there until she was united in holy matrimony to Roderick Jefferson Haynes in September of 1953 for 60 years until his passing in 2013. Their romantic lifelong union was evident by Roderick’s tattoo of Yvonne on his forearm and the birth of their eight beautiful children whom they loved and cherished dearly: Burt, Gary, Cheryl, Larry, Caroline, Shem, Anderson and Andrae. In 1969, the family relocated to Brooklyn, NY where they attended Hanson Place SDA Church.
Yvonne served her family and community as a homemaker and left a cheerful impression on everyone that had an opportunity to meet her. She was so jovial, that her laughter, sense of humor, hospitable spirit and her well-known delicious cooking, attracted people from all over. She was famous for her roti, sweet bread, macaroni pie, mauby, sorrel, ginger beer, just to name a few. She was very caring and was never hesitant to share with others in any way she could. Her home provided a safe haven for her friends and the friends of her children. She was dedicated to the Lord and her home life reflected as such; if you spent the night you were invited to church. If you were over on Friday evening at sunset, you were invited to worship. The family would sing as Dad played his guitar and the warm and welcoming presence of the Lord filled their home.
Yvonne loved to share the love of Jesus with others and would share Ellen White’s writings, sermons from Yvonne 's favorite pastors, bibles, and any means of encouraging words to draw one closer to the Lord. She served as fervent member of the Baytown United SDA Church for many years. There, she served faithfully as the Sabbath School Director and brought life to this department with her influence of spiritual edification and bible lessons, and by her ability to draw others to her programs with special guest singers, speakers, poetry and plays. She would always say we have to be lively, but reverent in the house of God.
Her most recent residence was in Brooklyn New York, for the last 7 years where she retired her years of service and would be cared for closely, by her youngest son Andrae. She even enjoyed a trip back home to Trinidad and Tobago. Our beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend departed this life on Monday August 2, 2021. Her passing has brought sadness to the hearts of all who knew her. Yvonne leaves behind: her sister Molly Joseph, her daughter Caroline Haynes, sons Gary Haynes, Larry Haynes and Andrae Haynes, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Life is not promised to us by the day, hour, minute, second, or each breath we take. We should reach for the everlasting light, and it should be our destiny. Yvonne has reached her destiny of rest until Jesus calls His children home. God’s plans are many things we cannot understand, but we must trust God’s judgment and be guided by His hand. “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. II Timothy 4:7-8
