W. C. was born on February 17, 1925 in Huntington, Texas to Rosie and Homer Reeves. He graduated from Huntington High School in 1942 and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1944 serving with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II. He participated in four major invasions including the taking of Iwo Jima in 1945. He later moved to Baytown and met Ruby Dry, the love of his life. They married in 1950 and spent 59 wonderful years together raising a family, traveling with their San Jac Wheelers travel group to all fifty states and abroad, playing dominoes, and enjoying life to the fullest.
A former life insurance agent with American National Life and a sales representative for Big Bonus Merchandising, W. C. served as Chief Deputy Constable in Baytown for twelve years until he retired to his ranch with Ruby in Richards, Texas in 1988. He and his late brother-in-law, Dr. Kenneth W. Ford, had adjoining ranches and the two of them loved being outdoors together working cattle, planting gardens, and enjoying the wide open spaces. They always had a project going.
W. C. was very active in community service in Baytown and served two terms as president of the Baytown Evening Optimist Club volunteering his time for many civic events.
W. C. loved his family and treasured his friends above all else. A sweeter, kinder, more honest and compassionate man could not be found. He never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. He loved to dance and always had a twinkle in his eye and a big laugh ready to share. He was a good man.
W. C. was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Verline Boyett and Dezzie Connor, his brother Bill Reeves and his sister-in-law Pearl Derryberry. In addition to his wife Ruby, he is survived by his son Gary Reeves and wife Jacqueline Reeves, grandson Zachary Reeves, daughter Connie Reeves Cooke and husband Clayton Cooke, grandsons Corbin, Cameron and Forester Cooke, brother Frank Reeves, sister-in-law Opal Ford, niece Sherri Hanson and husband Mike Hanson, and numerous other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his precious Chihuahua, Coco, who was always by his side in his favorite chair.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, the staff of Remington Park Assisted Living, and the staff of Faith Community Hospice for the loving care they provided during the last two weeks of W. C.'s extraordinary life. He will be terribly missed and loved always.
