Ted was born and raised in Salina, Kansas, graduated from Salina High School. After graduating, he worked at L&W Transmission, joined Army Reserves in March 1964, and married Julia Tharp in November 1964. In 1966 he began working for the postal service as a clerk. In 1970 he moved to Baytown, Texas for the USPS as a clerk carrier in Pasadena. Later, he worked in Houston for vehicle maintenance working the tools, then moved to being an analyst and worked his way up to being a vehicle maintenance superintendent, retired from USPS in April of 2004. He transferred with the Army Reserves from Salina, Kansas to Pasadena, Texas in 1970 at 808th Pipeline Engineering Company, reached the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (CW4), and retired in May 1995.
Ted loved camping at lakes in Kansas, water skiing and ice skating on Kanopolis and Wilson lakes, pheasant and quail hunting with co-worker and good friend Don Plumber. After moving to Texas, he took up the sport of saltwater fishing primarily in Trinity Bay learning from his older brother and several Hankamer natives and started to learn the remaining bays in the Galveston Bay Complex back in the 80’s picking one bay per year and fished it for the whole year. From the time he moved to Texas until the early 80’s he spent Thanksgiving week going back to Kansas pheasant and quail hunting. He enjoyed duck and goose hunting with several friends and neighbor, Terry Nicholson, in the northern stretches of the marsh above I-10. He also took up the sport of deer hunting in West Texas for approximately 25 years before he took his brother-in-law up on the offer to start hunting deer in Eastern Kansas. He and Julia enjoyed being certified weigh masters for 20 years weighing fish for several fishing tournaments, being able to listen to all the fish stories being told after weigh in was completed, last tournament they worked was July 2017. He also enjoyed traveling to Washington, DC; Florida and the Keyes, and the Alaska cruise him and Julia took. Another one of his favorites was the love he had for his animals which there are too many to name.
One of his biggest assets was the ability to mentor and teach people the way of life, his knowledge of fixing or repairing a multitude of items, and how to cope with life in general. He was proud of his church and the all of the parishioners associated with it. He was always willing to give a helping hand when needed without much hesitation.
The family encourages his friends and family to join them for a memorial service at Earthman Funeral Home at 3919 Garth Rd., Baytown, Texas, 77521 on October 24, 2017 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the memorial that has been set up for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s educational fund.
