Robert Richard Porter, Jr., 87, of Baytown, passed away peacefully at home from complications of pancreatic cancer, on Friday, June 21, 2013. He was born May 3, 1926, in Goose Creek at the old Lillie Duke Hospital and was a lifelong resident of Baytown.
He attended Robert E. Lee High School, where he played the trumpet in the band. As a youth he was a member of Boy Scout Troop #255.
Robert joined the Navy on his 17th birthday in 1943, where he proudly served the country he loved during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Between wars, he began his career at Humble Oil and Refining. After the Korean Conflict, he went back to work there and eventually retired from Exxon on September 1, 1986, after 40 years of loyal service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Richard Porter, Sr. and Rosa Martha Lengefeld Porter; brother, Lemuel Porter and a granddaughter, Jennifer Greenfield.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Ruth Porter of Baytown; devoted daughters, Cari Greenfield and her husband Mark of Jewell, Iowa, Jeanne Quillin and her husband Kim of Danville, California and Nancy Porter of Houston; loving grandchildren, Justin Greenfield, Ashley Meier and her husband Gary, Cody Greenfield, Jennifer Quillin and Catherine Quillin; numerous loving nieces and nephews. He was anxiously awaiting the birth of his first great-grandchild due in August.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Navarre Funeral Home. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 28, 2013, at the funeral home with Rev. Mark Wells officiating. A graveside service will be held at 10:45 a.m., Friday, June 28, 2013, at the Houston National V.A. Cemetery.
