Olga Elizabeth (Srubar) Svrcek, age 92, passed away the morning of October 5, 2021 in the loving presence of family and the comfort of her home. She was born to the late Anton and Aloise Srubar in LaGrange, Texas, on November 7, 1928. She resided in Baytown, Texas for over 70 years.
Olga was raised in the small, rural Czech community of Plum, Texas during the Depression alongside two bothers and four sisters. As the daughter of share croppers, Mom often spoke of those difficult times but also recalled the good times she had with her siblings and cousins on the farm. She was proud of her Czech up-bringing and fluently spoke Czech all her life.
Olga met her husband, Bernard H. Svrcek, as WWII was drawing to a close and they married on May 6, 1947. Upon settling down in Baytown, Mom became a thrifty homemaker and enjoyed raising her four children. She was a firm but loving stay-at-home mother who instilled a strong Catholic faith, prayer life and work ethic in her kids. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and served in the Altar Society, Legion of Mary and KJZT, a Catholic Czech Fraternal Society. Olga was hired as a bookkeeper at People’s State Bank in 1978, and retired from what is now Bank of America after 10 years of dedicated service. She and dad spent more time traveling thereafter, making occasional trips to the casinos in Louisiana and spending time at the family farm in Fayetteville, Texas. After dad passed away, Granny, as she was affectionately known, enjoyed spending time with their 11 grandchildren, and eventually the great-grandchildren. They each held a special spot in their hearts for her.
Mom was pre-deceased by her husband Bernard and all her brothers (Edwin Srubar and Bennie Srubar) and sisters (Evelyn Hrbacek, Adela Svoboda, Bernice Castello and Gladys Barta). She is survived by her children: James (Sharon) Svrcek, Bernard (Wilma) Svrcek, Janice (Craig) Stong and Theresa (Al) Martinez. In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren: Keith Svrcek, Kevin Svrcek, and Kristin (Michael) Turbeville; Ashley Svrcek and Erin Svrcek; Jennifer (Will) Flemming, Katie (Tristan) Maldonado, and Christopher (Ashley) Stong; Michelle (David) Papst, Lynsie (Corey) McGuinness, and Amanda (Eric) Granhaug. Also surviving are 18 great-grandchildren: Alissa Schmadl and Jace Turbeville; Jonathon and Klara Greer; Bailey and Charlie Flemming; George, Jonnie Mae and Henry Maldonado; Parson Stong; Elizabeth and Emily Papst; Meredith and Adam McGuinness; and Graham, Daphne, Whitney and Bryce Granhaug.
Visitation will be Monday, October 11, 2021 from 5-8 pm at Navarre Funeral Home in Baytown, Texas; the Rosary will be recited at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at 10 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1907 Carolina Street in Baytown, Texas.
