Minnetta Charlton, 97 years old, was born in Christiansburg Virginia in September 1925 to William Holles Charlton and Beulah Atkinson Charlton. Minnetta graduated from Radford College with a BS in Education. She taught High School Science and Home Economics. Minnetta met William Howard Dickerson, her husband of 59 years, on a double date, in 1947. They married April 10, 1948.
Minnetta moved from her home in Christiansburg, Virginia; to Houston, Texas; to Baytown, Texas; to Mentor, Ohio and then back to Baytown. In Baytown, Minnetta helped organize Cedar Bayou Garden Club and was an active member for over 50 years. Howard and Minnetta won Yard of the Month several times. As a judge, Minnetta enjoyed awarding the Yard of The Month to others. Minnetta and Howard enjoyed car travels throughout the USA and ocean cruises where many lifelong friends were made. Minnetta was a victim of Hurricane Harvey losing her home in Baytown and had one last move to Houston.
Minnetta was a member of First Christian Church of Baytown for over 50 years. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the Christian Youth Fellowship and Church United.
Minnetta was a skilled pianist in her church in Virginia and taught piano lessons. Her children enjoyed coming home from school to sounds of her playing the piano. Minnetta was also a skilled seamstress and would design and make matching dresses for her mom Beulah, daughter Nancy and herself. Every Christmas everyone opened presents with fun pajamas made by her.
In her marriage with Howard, they welcomed three sons and one daughter. William Floyd Dickerson and his wife Sharron live in Georgetown, Texas. Nancy Dickerson Marshall and her husband John live in El Reno, Oklahoma. Dr. Nathan Charlton Dickerson and his wife Dr. Kathleen Cordova live in Las Cruces, New Mexico. John Reed Dickerson and his wife Gina live in Houston, Texas. These four children brought into this family seven grandsons and five granddaughters. MInnetta enjoyed being a Great Grandmother to seven great grandsons and five great granddaughters. Minnetta also so loved her nephews Holles and Jim Charlton in Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Dickerson and her brother George Holles Charlton.
On May 20th, at 10:00am, Minnetta Charlton Dickerson’s funeral services will be held at First Christian Church of Baytown, 201 Forrest Ave., Baytown, TX 77520. Additional funeral information can be seen at www.navarrefuneralhome.com.
Honored to serve as pallbearers will be grandsons: Scott Dickerson, Geoffrey Dickerson, John Hervert, Chris Marshall, Victor Dickerson, Austin Dickerson, and Colin Dickerson. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters: Alexandra Dickerson, Kathryn Dickerson, Kelly Dickerson, and Katie Dickerson.
