Miguel Contreras, Jr. (Mike) died early morning on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at his home in Baytown, Texas after a long battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Miguel and Canuta Contreras and was the loving husband of the late Carmen Contreras for 62 years.
Mike graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown and then served in the U. S. Army for eight years and received his honorable discharge. After serving his country, Mike returned to Baytown and married Carmen Martinez Piña. He then became gainfully employed by ExxonMobil (then Humble Oil & Refinery) as a Merchant Marine and was able to travel internationally including places like Pakistan and India and retired after 30 years of service. He was an avid fan of the Houston Astros and the Houston Texans.
His brothers, Rudy Contreras Sr. and Rigoberto Contreras Sr. also preceded him in death.
He leaves behind his two lovely daughters, Tina Hill and her husband Tom and Deborah Rodriguez; grandsons, Ricky Rodriguez, Jr. and Michael Rodriguez; granddaughters, Tiffany and Malissa Rodriguez and Taylor Hill; great-grandchildren, Ricky Rodriguez, III, Mia Rodriguez and Benjamin Rodriguez; brothers, Jose A. Contreras, John Contreras, Manuel Contreras and Albert Contreras all of Baytown and sisters, Elida Villarreal of San Antonio and Irma Delvalle of Houston. Mike will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews along with many other family members.
The family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home in Baytown on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. A rosary will start at 7 p.m. by Deacon Rudy Venegas.
Pallbearers will be Robert Martinez, Jr., Michael Rodriguez, Tom Hill, Manuel Contreras, Ray Delvalle and Albert Contreras.
Honorary Pallbearers will be SFC Rick Pallanez, Jr., Ret., and Malissa Rodriguez.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers, Nina Davis, Ray Del Valle, Michael Rodriguez and Altus Hospice.
A funeral mass is scheduled to begin at 11a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Baytown after which he will be laid to rest at White Cemetery in Highlands, Texas.
