I attended Lee College from 1978-1980.  Coach was one of my P.E. teachers and I loved watching him coach the Rebels.  He was a coach with lots of style and pizzazz.  The Rebels had great teams during that era.  Coach was a slow moving, but determined man.  A look from him would send shivers down your spine or a smile to your face.  He always seemed to bring out the best in anyone that was around him.  He was a great coach and a great man.

Your Dad and I played racquetball as part of my athletics requirement every week. He was so good.  But I beat him a few times.  I was also pretty good in basketball so I would come in early and work with the team which was very good at the time.  I’m talking 1972-1973. He would have me play one on one with his top scoring guard. I actually beat him once.  This was during the summer. Your Dad asked me to join the team but I was at a bigger university at the time just trying to make some summer hours. Richard Bryant was on the team at that time.  I truly just loved playing racquetball with your dad.  We would stay after hours just to keep playing. He was such a fine person.  I loved being around him. And just becoming friends. I will never forget him. Joseph Malchar.

It saddened me to see your father's obituary. I saw it only today.

Please know I am sorry for your loss and that you are in my thoughts. I remember you were quite close to him.

Mike and I met in college, and have remained best friends ever since.  I really will miss all the great times we have had.  We called each other all the time to talk basketball, baseball, and football and to keep up with our families.  For years Mike came to Austin to go to the State Basketball Tournament with me.  Through the years we have had great trips to Nome, Baytown, New Orleans, but the countless trips to Galveston to spend on the beach were the best.  Our family has fond memories of those fun times.  There will never be another Coach Hefley, and we will miss him.  He was one of a kind.   -- BJ and Norma

I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your dad.  I wish I'd have found out earlier so I could have come to the visitation.  I have a lot of good memories of him at Lee College, at y'all's home, and when your folks came to San Marcos to visit.  I know he will be greatly missed.

I got to know Coach Hefley while covering Lee College basketball for The Baytown Sun in the 1980s. He was a great guy and a great coach. Always asked about the family. He will be missed.

 My deepest condolences to you all.  Though I haven't seen Coach in several years, I often cherish the memories of playing for him at Lee College.  Way fun times.

Our memories of Mike are full of laughter and good times. Rest in peace, Mike. You lived life with zest and made our days brighter.

Remembering Coach Hefley from his years at Sour Lake/Hardin Jefferson HS.  I graduated in 1962 but remembered that he was a well respected coach and teacher.  Our last names being so similar caused a mix-up occasionaly at the post office.  That was when you didn't need a specific box number to get your mail.  The postmaster knew everyone, and just put the mail in the box if the number was left off!!!!
Also followed Coach and his success after he moved to Baytown and my family lived in Mont Belvieu.  
Prayers go out to Coach's family during this time.

Coach Hefley was a good man and I will miss visiting with him about the Longhorns.

Our family is honored to have shared the last few years of our lives with "Coach."  We've laughed with him, cried with him, learned from him and most of all shared our love with him.  He was a precious man and loved by all who knew him.  We will cherish our good memories and think of him every day.  Your memories of the wonderful dad and grandfather he was will sustain you.  I know that you will draw strength from his eternal spirit of love and goodness.

So sorry to hear about Mike.  Maggie and I are in VA and will be unable to attend the services, but our thoughts and prayers are with the family.  Both of us worked with Donnie at Barbers Hill.  We considered Donnie & Mike dear friends.
