Funeral services for Mary Helen Wooten, 91, of Baytown, will be held at the Earthman Baytown Funeral Home on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Helen DeLeon of the Webster Presbyterian Church in Webster, TX will officiate. Mary Helen will be interred at the Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Baytown.
She passed peacefully on Monday, April 26, 2010, at the Emeritus Retirement Community in Friendswood, TX. Born Mary Helen Stalls on May 4th, 1918, in Paris, TX, she grew up and attended high school in White Dear, TX. Mary Helen attended West Texas State University where she graduated in 1940 with a degree in art. She lived a long full life, with a great passion for painting and flowers. She married Christopher Eugene Wooten in 1940. During the war years she resided in Washington D.C. and in New York City. Later, Mary Helen owned and operated the Flower Mart Florist in Canyon, TX. She moved with her husband, Chris and two young sons to Baytown in 1956, and was known to many as the long-term owner of the Wooten Art Gallery and Frame Shop on Texas Avenue, which opened in 1970. She will be fondly remembered by many customers, students, and local merchants.
Mary Helen is preceded in death by her father Lundy Lane Stalls, her mother Sara Elsa Stalls, and her husband Christopher Eugene Wooten. She is survived by her sons Gary Wooten and wife, Mary of Atlanta, GA, and Dr. Kevin Wooten and wife, Heather of Kemah, TX; two grandsons, Michael Wooten of Atlanta and Christopher Wooten and wife, Jennifer also of Atlanta; and two great-grandchildren, Evan and Dylan; and two step-granddaughters, Katie Campbell Doty and husband, Bryce of Denver, CO and Audrey Campbell of Austin, TX. She is also survived by her two brothers, James Stalls of Amarillo and W. D. Stalls and wife, Thala of Albuquerque, NM.
The family is deeply appreciative of the years of loving care provided by the staff of Emeritus Retirement and Assisted Living Community in Friendswood, Texas. In lieu of usual remembrances or flowers, donations may be sent to the Art League of Baytown, PO Box 43, Baytown, TX 77520.
