Mary Elkins is survived by daughter Paula East Rutledge, son-in-law Greg Rutledge , of Baytown, Texas; sister Pauline Casteel Singleton, and brother-in-law Leonard Singleton, of Baytown, Texas. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband R. D.(Ray) Elkins, of Baytown, Texas; her father Luther Casteel, her mother Roma Campbell Casteel, her sister Joyce Sly, and brothers William Ralph Casteel, Luther Ray Casteel, and Marvin Owen Casteel; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
Mary Elkins was born on July 15, 1929 in LaPorte, Texas. She graduated from Lamar Univeristy and the University of Houston with degrees in teaching and counseling. She began her teaching career at Ashbel Smith and Carver Jones Elementary Schools. She taught briefly at Barber’s Hill ISD. She taught at Lee College and for Harris County teaching GED courses until 2012. She was passionate about teaching and taught up until four years before her death.
She loved gardening and had many roses. Later in life, she concentrated on daylilies and had many daylily beds. In her final years, she enjoyed watching the flowers bloom and the birds that were attracted to her backyard.
Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, September 22nd, 2016 at Earthman Funeral Home 3919 Garth Rd Baytown, TX. The funeral is scheduled for 10 am Friday, September 23rd, 2016 at Earthman Funeral Home 3919 Garth Rd, Baytown Tx.
