It is difficult to speak of Maria without mentioning her dearly loved sister, Victoria, in the same breath. Maria and her Victoria were dedicated to caring for their widowed Mother Maria till her death. In her early years, Maria and Victoria could be found at the Baytown Brunson Theatre, where they worked, until it closed in the 1980's. Maria and Victoria worked together, volunteered together and served family and friends together.
Maria never married. Though she never had children of her own, she loved and cared for her nieces and nephews as her own. Maria was the only Salas female to hold a driver's license. She was often driving her nieces and nephews to sporting events, drama club and many other extracurricular events. She took much joy in watching the family grow.
Maria was a master seamstress, a talented baker, cook and so much more. She was always busy making precious hand-made gifts, for family and friends. Maria’s nieces and nephews have many treasured crocheted and knitted blankets, hats and scarves.
Above all, Maria led a true and faithful life. She loved with all her heart. She would see people in need and would give what she could spare all the while saying “No need to worry. God will provide". She also volunteered for many years at Odessey Hospice and was a constant fixture at the First Presbyterian Church Thrift Store
For the last seven years Maria, Victoria and Ana Maria were cared for together and came to be known as “The Daisies “. As one of the Daisies, Maria was cared for by many, but her daily care was undertaken by Joshua Gonzalez, Raquel Gonzalez and Adriana Zamarripa, a special friend and blessing to the entire family. In her last days, Maria was also lovingly cared for by Harbor Hospice staff members.
Maria will be forever missed. We know for certainty that she is in God's Glory and being rewarded for her life of faith and service. She is survived by her loving sister Victoria Salas and many nieces and nephews.
A “Celebration of Life” will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the building fund of Faith Presbyterian Church.
