She was preceded in death by her mother, Estep Cubage; sister, Hugh Roy Cook; husband, John Mark Shearer; and daughter, Betty Shearer Ashworth.
Affectionately known as Mimi to many, Peggy was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Corpus Christi, and graduated from Miller High School. She received two BA degrees, one from Texas A&I–Kingsville and one from the University of Houston. In 1938, she married John Mark Shearer and moved to Goose Creek. Peggy was a longtime elementary school teacher and retired in 1967. She remained very active in the Baytown community well into her 90s, as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Memorial Baptist Church and the Baytown Country Club. She loved to travel and visited countless countries throughout her lifetime, as her love of learning and of teaching never waned. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, ""It's not the length of life, but depth of life…,"" and for Peggy, she was blessed to have both. Her legacy of generosity, graciousness, education and love of learning will continue long after she is gone. She was a woman of uncommon strength and courage … She will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her son, John Dennis Shearer of Houston; daughter, Judy Shearer Raneri of Houston; grandchildren Maggie and David Deal, Leslie Raneri, Troy Ashworth, Lori Ashworth and Alison and Chuck Gass; great-grandchildren, Gelila and Kathia Raneri, Molly Deal and Libby Gass.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at Cedarcrest Cemetery, with Pastor Randy Piatt of Memorial Baptist Church officiating.
