Jerri was born on December 28, 1958 in Baytown to Gerald and Myra Beth Adams. She spent the first four years of her life as an only child living in Center Point, TX and enjoyed it immensely. The family moved to Baytown prior to the arrival of her younger brother Dusty. His presence changed the family dynamics, but he soon became her favorite play toy. She also took on the role of being a big sis.
Jerri attended Ross S. Sterling High School and received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Radio, Television, and Film from Sam Houston State University; and later she received her Masters of Science in Bilingual, Multilingual, and Multicultural Education from the University of Houston- Clear Lake. She also attended Rice University, Lamar University, and Lee College. After high school, Jerri volunteered with Amigos de las Américas and went to Honduras to provide health services. The immersion aspect of the trip greatly improved her Spanish and taught her about rural living and pigs; she avoided pork for the rest of her life.
Jerri worked in education for 27 years as a teacher, administrator, and assistant principal for Galena Park and Goose Creek ISDs. She especially enjoyed her time teaching 1st & 3rd grade ESL at Carver Elementary, and she loved her students. After retiring, she spent 7 years volunteering as a docent for the Wooster School and also became a realtor with Re/Max One Premier in Mont Belvieu. She loved the freedom of being a realtor, the new friendships, and the increased community involvement.
On August 31, 1990, Jerri married Roger Hughes and they shared a memorable life together for nearly 30 years. During that time, they were gifted with daughters Bethanny Alice and Caitlyn Elizabeth, sons Zackery Adam and Jarred Clayton, and her dog Harley.
Jerri was a loving mother, wife, and big sister. She cared deeply for her family and would do anything for them. She was an active member of Memorial Baptist and loved her Sunday school class. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling, cooking, and seeing nature wherever she could find it. Her idea of a fun trip was a long road trip with many stops along the way, but she never wanted to stay in one spot. Yellowstone National Park was Jerri’s favorite family destination. Jerri also enjoyed cooking and was known for her angel rolls, pies, dressing, and large army size portions.
Jerri was preceded in death by her daughters Bethanny and Caitlyn, and her parents, Gerald and Myra Beth Adams. She is survived by her husband Roger, her sons Zackery and Jarred, her precious dog Harley, and her brother Gerald Jr. (“Dusty”) and his wife Kay Adams and their children Katelyn and Lauren, and a host of cousins.
Funeral services will be held at Memorial Baptist Church in Baytown on Friday, August 7th at 10:00 am with visitation preceding at 9:00 am. A graveside service will be held at the McAdams Family Cemetery in Huntsville at 2:00 pm.
