Jim graduated from Robert E. Lee High School with the class of 1959. After graduation, he attended Lee College where he earned his Associates Degree.
On April 8, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart Judy Givens.
In 1966, Jim became the manager of the family-owned business, Starett Lumber Company that was located at 3318 N. Main Street in Baytown. Under his management, the business continued to expand and modernize until 1980. At that time, the family business was sold to Lowe’s. After selling the family business, Jim began, Starett’s Incorporated which specialized in residential and commercial construction as well as property management.
For over 30 years, Jim and Judy were dedicated workers at Baytown First Church of the Nazarene. He served on the church board, was director of children’s church and the bus ministry. After his retirement in 2004, Jim enjoyed golf, maintaining his property on Wallisville Road, and traveling with his family.
Jim’s desire was to be known as “A good Christian businessman”.
Jim is preceded in death by his father Brooks Starett and mother Violet Starett.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Judy Starett; son Steven Starett and wife Brenda; daughter Vickie Lancon and husband Tim; grandchildren James D. Starett and wife Emily, Geoffrey Starett and Madeline Starett.
To serve as pallbearers are Linton Givens, James Starett, Tim Lancon, Cary Ranne, James O’Neal and Mario Sanchez. Serving as honorary pallbearer lifelong friend Merrell Holt.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 am, Saturday April 29, 2023 at Earthman Baytown Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 11 am in the chapel with Scott Van Bibber and Jason Shuttlesworth officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens in Baytown.
Arrangements are under the direction of Earthman Baytown Funeral Home located at 3919 Garth Rd., Baytown, Texas 77521.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Baytown First Church of the Nazarene (P. O. Box 1363, Baytown, Texas 77522) or Wooster Baptist Church (700 Bayway Drive, Baytown, Texas 77520.
