He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Bess Ruth Pittman on March 6, 1954, this year marked their 70th year of marriage. Together they raised three sons, Robert, Larry and Greg.
James started his career with Bealls Department Stores, working his way up the ladder to store manager after just a few years. He retired after 46 years.
James loved his special golf competitions with his retired brothers, Cotton, Sam and Fletcher. They spent countless vacations together with all the family. He also played a mean game of tennis with his church buddies.
James was a man of faith and served as a deacon for most of the churches he was a member of.
He was very proud to serve his country for several years, as a Drill Sergeant in the Texas National Guard.
James is survived by his loving wife, Bess Murphy; son, Larry Murphy and wife Becky of Baytown, Texas; son, Thomas Gregory Murphy of League City, Texas; grandsons, Charles Robert Murphy and wife Beth of Argyle, Texas, Michael Thomas Murphy of Baytown Texas and Mark Anthony Murphy and wife Tiffany of Hutto, Texas. He proudly claimed 5 great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren as well.
James was a family man and will be dearly missed.
Graveside service will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 3:00 PM at New Emmaus Cemetery, 3140 FM 856, Troup, TX 75789.
