James Garley "Red" Keeling, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025 in Old River, Texas, at the age of 84. Born on December 30, 1940, in Gerty, Oklahoma, Red lived a life marked by love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
Red was the devoted husband of Sonya Shofner Keeling, with whom he shared 62 cherished years of marriage. He was a proud and loving father to his son, James Keith Keeling and wife Darleen, a doting grandfather to Christopher Keeling and wife Katy, and Chad Keeling and wife Mallory, and a delighted great-grandfather to Caleb, Ethan, Eli, and Benjamin Keeling. His family was his greatest joy, and he leaves behind a legacy of warmth and support that will endure for generations.
A skilled and enterprising businessman, Red was the owner of Heavy Haul, Inc., a Baytown, Texas-based trucking company specializing in oversized and overweight loads. He had a keen eye for opportunity, finding undervalued properties and taking great satisfaction in sealing a deal. Red also contributed to his community as an active member of the Business Development Board at Texas First Bank, fostering connections between businesses and the bank.
Faith was the cornerstone of Red’s life. For 25 years, he was a committed member of Elim Church in Pasadena, Texas, before moving to Old River and joining Old River Baptist Church. Known for his generosity, he was always ready to lend a hand, whether firing up the BBQ or assisting anyone in need. Red’s deep love for the Lord Jesus Christ shone through in his gratitude for life’s blessings, which he expressed daily.
After a courageous five-year battle with lung cancer, Red now rests in the arms of Jesus Christ. Though he will be profoundly missed, his family and friends find comfort in knowing he is at peace.
Red is survived by wife, Sonya; son, Keith Keeling and wife Darleen; grandsons, Christopher Keeling and wife Katy, and Chad Keeling and wife Mallory; great-grandsons, Caleb, Ethan, Eli, and Benjamin; and sister, Oleva Bratton of Dayton, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Edna Keeling; brothers, Olen, Donald, and W.T. Keeling; and sisters, Lola Sullivan, Bethenia Howard, and Essie Howard.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Glynn and Kim Jordy of Ball Ground, Georgia, for their selfless dedication in caring for Red during his final six weeks. Their love and support will never be forgotten. We would also like to acknowledge the excellent care given by Ascend Hospice.
A memorial service will be held at Old River Baptist Church on Friday, March 28, 2025, officiated by Rev. Ron Nissen and Rev. Wes Hinote. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Old River Baptist Church, MD Anderson, or a charity of your choice. Interment will follow at Palms Memorial Park in Dayton, Texas.
