James Coleman Godwin was born September 1, 1925 to Iona and Homer Godwin in Mineola, Texas, and passed away on June 25, 2013. Coleman always said he was born in Mineola but he grew up on Okinawa. He was in the Navy on an LCI at the invasion of Okinawa and was so proud of being a World War II Veteran. After the war he came to Baytown to work for Humble Company. He met Chic in Baytown. He liked to say he picked her up on Texas Avenue. They were married in 1950. They had two sons, James and Richard. His favorite things were coaching the boy's ball clubs, riding his tractor, and his seven acre "ranch". After retiring from Exxon he was on the Harris County Appraisal District Review Board and served on Baytown City Council for six years. He was an ex member of the Baytown Kiwanis Club in which he was "Rookie of the Year" and "Kiwanan of the Year". He was also a member of the Baytown Historical Museum Board. He was a member of the Missouri St. Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents Homer & Iona Godwin, sister Floy Elliot and husband Hugh, and brother Louis Ray Godwin. He is survived by his wife of nearly sixty-three years, Chic, sons, James Godwin of Pangburn, Arkansas, Richard Godwin and wife Lori of Baytown, grandchildren Dr. Kristalynne Gray of League City, James Godwin of Louisiana, Jordyn Godwin of San Antonio, and great grandchild Benjamin Nicholas Gray.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, June 28, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Missouri Street Church of Christ, 3400 South Highway 146 Business, Baytown, Texas 77520 with Bill Ehlig officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
