Jack G. Mapes, 78, of Baytown, TX was born February 25, 1928 in Vernon and passed away Sunday, October 29, 2006 in a Galveston healthcare facility. He was a member of the Church of Christ faith, owner of Mapes Electric, and was a U. S. Army WWII veteran.
Jack was an almost fifty year member of the Masonic Fraternity. He was an endowed Member and Past Worshipful Master of Cedar Bayou Lodge #321, A. F. & A. M. and an Endowed Member and Past Master of Old River Lodge #1442, A. F. & A. M. He was an Affiliated Past Master of Sampson Lodge #231, A. F. & A. M. He was the Right Worshipful District Deputy Grand Master of Masonic District #107, Grand Lodge of Texas in 1991 and received the Golden Trowel Award form Cedar Bayou Lodge, #321. He was a Past High Priest and Member of Goose Creek Chapter #408, Dayton Chapter #284, Royal Arch Masons, and a Past Thrice Illustrious Master and Member of Goose Creek Council #339, Dayton Council #219 Royal and Select Masters. Jack was a member of Kenedy Commandery #61, Knights Templar. He received several honors form the York Rite Groups of Freemasonry. From the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, he received the “Order of High Priesthood”, “Cornerstone Award”, and the “Super Excellent Masters” Degree. From the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters he received the “Order of the Silver Trowel” and the “Cryptic Triangle” award. Jack was an endowed and very active member of the Houston Scottish Rite Bodies of Freemasonry and served many years on the Baytown 25th Degree Team. In recognition of his service and dedication to the Scottish Rite Masonry, he was honored with the rank of “Knight Commander of the Court of Honor” (K. C. C. H.) Jack was also a Past President of the Baytown Scottish Rite Club. He was a member of the “Royal Order of the Duck” and an active member and supporter of the “Trouble Shooters Committee”, “Volunteers Committee”, and Membership Committee.” Jack was a member of other appendant bodies of Masonry. He was a member of Arabia Temple Shrine, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Gulf Coast York Rite College #106.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Dime Manning officiating. Masonic services will be under the auspices of Cedar Bayou Lodge #321 and active Masons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at Cedar Bayou Masonic Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia Mapes of Baytown; sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin Ray and Sharon Mapes of Anahuac, Donald Gene and Roxanna Mapes of Willis, and Larry Joe and Pamela Mapes of Arcadia; daughter, Linda Darlene Mapes of Baytown; sisters, Christine Hodnet and Jo Ann Mapes, both of Muleshoe and Barbara Bush of Lubbock; brothers, Lee Mapes, Travis Mapes, and George Youngblood, all of Lubbock; grandchildren, Ronja DeRamus and husband Timothy, John T. Payne Jr., Miranda Mapes, Michael Mapes, Heather Mapes, James Mapes, Jenny Rocha, and Steven Rocha; and great grandchildren, Stephanie Miller and T. J. DeRamus.
