Gene was born February 15, 1938 to Sidney D. and Julia Labbe Nolen in San Diego, Texas. He passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2022. He was educated in Corpus Christi, Texas public schools and graduated from Roy Miller High School in 1957. He completed his formal higher education at Del Mar College (1971) and graduated in 1976 from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas with a BS in Administration. Gene served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Germany and worked in sales in the Oil and Gas supply sectors of Houston for forty years.
After retirement he completed his long career as a Substitute Teacher for 14 years in Chambers County, Texas in 2019, where he was respected as an exceptional educator by the administration, faculty and students alike. Gene, a life-long member of the Episcopal Church, served in many various roles as a worship leader in his home parish, Trinity Episcopal Church in Baytown, Texas. He also served on Cursillo retreats and Kairos prison ministries.
Gene served as a Reserve Police officer in his hometown of Corpus Christi. Gene welcomed the birth of his only child, Paul Sidney, in 1967. He married his much beloved wife Molly Jean on May 6, 2000. Together they are the parents and step-parents of Paul Nolen, Scott Lamonte, Brad Lamonte and Kevin Lamonte. He had one grandson, Luke Nolen. Also surviving are his nephews John Michael Nolen, Travis Nolen and niece Kathy Schneeberg. Gene was dearly loved by Molly’s family, the St. John’s, and he loved having this large extra family be a part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Paul Sidney Nolen (1967-2021), brother, John Sidney Nolen (1939-2019) as their parents.
Services are under the direction of Navarre Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at Trinity Episcopal Church, 5010 North Main Street in Baytown, Texas 77521.
The family requests no flowers. A memorial donation to his church, Trinity Episcopal, may be made if one wishes.
