Charles Corliss “Dusty” Rhodes, 86, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, at his Baytown, TX home with his family by his side. He was born Aug. 3, 1935, in Port Arthur, TX, to Charles Raymond “Buddy” Rhodes & Cleona Jane Ronquille.
Corliss grew up in Orange TX and worked in the family café. He graduated St. Mary’s high school, then enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he held the rank of Acting Sergeant, E4, awarded the Good Conduct Medal and picked up the nickname, Dusty. He was chosen as the USMC representative to the German-American Friendship Observance which invited one person from each branch of the US service for the celebration in Hamburg, Germany, where he met his wife Ludmilla “Lucy” Penner.
He and Lucy lived in Bridge City, TX while he was a Supervisor for Crown Zellerbach. The restaurant business was in his blood, and soon he decided to take the leap. He began to manage a Bonanza, which moved his family to Baytown, TX, and then The Sizzler. In the 70’s he decided to invest and open his own successful restaurants in Baytown, Dusty’s Fishnet and Dusty’s Seafood Restaurant. They were family run with a great group of employees. In his spare time, he enjoyed cars, boats, fishing and spending time with family.

The family is forever grateful to the Houston VA hospital for years of quality care. It wasn’t just a trip to the doctor - it was an outing. He found comradery talking to fellow vets in the sitting areas and waiting rooms. He was so excited when waiting for tests, he recognized the name of a long lost relative and we had a wonderful family reunion that year. Thank you to all the doctors, nurses and the specialty-clinic staff, home healthcare and physical therapists.
