Billy Nelson Young passed away on March 8, 2016, after a year-long battle with cancer. Billy was born in Whitney, Texas, on November 20, 1928, to Lois Chappell and Marvin Young. He was a faithful member of Missouri Street Church of Christ. He married his sweetheart, Vertie Mae Pace, on October 25, 1952.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Mamie Young and Lois Chappell Peacock, uncle Seyburn Chappell, brother Jerry Peacock, sister Dot Ford, sister Mary Francis McIntyre, sister-in-law Maxine Hatcher and her husband George Hatcher, brother-in-law Kenneth Pace, brother-in-law Jerry Pace, and brother-in-law, Pat Kinney.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Vertie Mae Young, son Ricky Young and his wife Kathy, daughter Pam Wilkinson, son Randy Young and his wife Angela, and daughter Patty Watson and her husband Allen. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Paige Hickey and her husband Jeff, Greg Wilkinson, Brandon Young and Alley Hallman, and Rachel Green and her husband Zack, and great-grandchildren Miles Kincaid Wilkinson, Levi Fuller, Brock Young, Bryce Young, and Emma Grace Wilkinson. He is survived by his aunt Maggie Chappell, his sister Betty Ruth Kinney and sisters-in-law Charlene Pace and Ginger Pace. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Billy graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and served as a sergeant in the Army from 1950 to 1952 where he was stationed in Korea and Japan.
Billy Young retired in 1986 as Senior Section Supervisor from Exxon after 36 years of service. He and his family spent 3-1/2 years, '66 through '69, in Thessaloniki, Greece, working for Exxon building and starting an Esso Pappas refinery.
The family would like to especially thank Mary Young for her care and support.
Pallbearers will be nephews Donald Welch, Mike Welch, Rusty Welch, Jeff Pace, Jonathan Pace, and Joel Pace. Honorary ball bearers are Joe Chandler and Robert Guenther.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home in Baytown, Texas. The funeral will be held at Navarre Funeral Home on Friday, March 11, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Camp Ruby Cemetery in Livingston, Texas at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests, with gratitude, memorial contributions in Billy's name be directed to the Missouri Street Church of Christ Food Pantry, 3400 S. Hwy 146, Baytown, TX 77520. Billy spent many years volunteering with this program and it was very dear to him.
