Betty Ann Dreyer Flower went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 16, 2023. She was born June 19, 1935 in Goose Creek (Baytown), Texas. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Annie Bell Clepper Dreyer of Baytown.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 69 years, Donald Eugene Flower of La Porte, Texas. She met Gene, her first and only sweetheart, at Second Baptist Church which their mothers helped found. She is also survived by sons, Jeff Flower and wife Bobbie of Carrollton, Wes Flower and wife Stacy of Spring and daughter Donna Flower Sherrill and husband Mike of Fort Worth; her grandchildren, Nicolas Flower and wife Sarah of Portland Oregon, Chloe Flower of San Diego California, Whitney Flower of Conroe, Scott Flower of Spring, Justin Sherrill and wife Kate of Tyler, and Kyle Sherrill of Fort Worth, brother Joe R. Dreyer of Baytown, sister, Dolores Dreyer Antonini, brother-in-Law Paul Flower and wife Sue, along with nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews.
After marrying Gene while he was student at Texas A&M, Betty enjoyed their many adventures together. She told stories about living in student housing on a shoestring budget and moving to different parts of the country when Gene got transferred with his job with Shell Oil. No matter where they went or what they did, she was happy to be his partner. This commitment to family resulted in moving back to La Porte at the earliest opportunity. For many happy decades, Betty and Gene enjoyed a Thursday night tradition of joining her mother, Joe, Silvia, and Dolores for a delicious homemade dinner followed by an animated evening of hand and foot canasta. She found similar joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren whether singing "I love you a bushel and a peck" or taking them on special trips to Alaska, Disneyworld and week-long camping trips. She treasured holiday feasts when the house was full of family. At the same time, she could always be counted on to listen patiently, lovingly to the large and small ups and downs in their lives. She found immense pleasure in her family and provided an example of how to love others fully and constantly.
After Betty and Gene returned to Texas, they renewed their membership with Second Baptist Church in Baytown, Texas where they remained for 55 years. For many of those years, Betty's served as the church financial secretary as well as a volunteer in the nursery where she could indulge her love for babies.
Betty found many ways to find pleasure in her own life and to share it with others. She was a skillful maker of countless cross-stitch pieces. She enthusiastically played cards, dominos and other games with friends and family any chance she could. In younger years, she was an avid bowler and later became a keen Sudoku player. Winning in these various pastimes was never the ultimate end goal - she simply enjoyed being and laughing with the ones she loved. In fact, her smile was ever present and her quick but gentle laughter was contagious.
Throughout her life, Betty had a servant's heart that greatly benefitted those who were blessed to know her. A humble woman, Betty would be the last to direct praise to herself or single herself out. She would never call herself remarkable but she surely was. God's commandments to love God and love others were woven into how she lived each day. It is no wonder why we consider her the "Queen of our Hearts". She was ready to celebrate when others' lives were good. She was there to check on and provide assistance or consolation when a friend or family member faced challenges or needed help. Her special love language was pies. Anyone who was fortunate enough to receive one of her pies considered themselves blessed. It is with much sadness that we express regret at losing her much too soon but we take comfort in the sure knowledge that she has resurrected with a body that is experiencing no pain. She is laughing and smiling again.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 20 from 11:30 - 12:30 followed by a funeral service at 12:30pm at Second Baptist Baytown Church, 6227 N. Main St., Baytown, Texas 77521. Burial will follow at Cedar Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we request that memorials be sent to Second Baytown Baptist Church.
