Benjamin Brown died at home on November 12, 2016 at the age of 37. He was born on April 1, 1979 and raised in Baytown where he attended Sterling High School. Ben attended the Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University of Louisiana and finished his degree in English and Humanities at the University of Houston-Downtown campus, graduating summa cum laude. He taught English at Robert E Lee High School in Baytown and kindergarten in Seoul, South Korea. He also was a substitute teacher in schools around the Baytown area.
One of Ben’s passions was music, playing piano, violin, harp and guitar, and carried his love of music throughout his life. Ben also loved to travel. He and his grandmother, Ellen Brown, went on an eight-week trek one summer in high school, traveling by car from Baytown throughout the western United States, up into Canada and back. He remembered this as one of the great trips of his life. While working in South Korea, he enjoyed traveling within Asia and Europe.
Benjamin suffered a form of muscular dystrophy and endured many hip surgeries in elementary school through college. He served as Houston-area and Texas state poster child for the Muscular Dystrophy Association from 1988-1990. He did not let his handicap prevent him from living a good and wonderful life. He loved life and all it offered him. Ben was a very spiritual person with strong faith and was a member of St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Baytown.
Ben was preceded in death by his grandparents Monte and Ellen Brown and Mary and Cleon Easley, all of Baytown. He is survived by his parents, Gary and Carol Brown of Baytown, brother Christopher Brown and nephews Harrison and Greyson, of San Antonio. Ben had many aunts, uncles and cousins, nieces and nephews on the Easley and Brown sides of his family.
A visitation will be held at Earthman’s Funeral Home at 3919 Garth Road, Baytown from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, November 18, 2016. A memorial service will take place at Trinity Episcopal Church, 5010 North Main on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 11:00 followed by refreshments and fellowship. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children-Houston.
