Alice (Duff) Smith passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, January 14, 2024, to claim the promises from her Lord and Savior, Jesus. Alice was born in Walker, Louisiana, on July 4, 1924, to Walter Duff and Ellender “Ellen” (McLin) Duff. In August 1947, she married the love of her life, Truett Smith.
Alice grew up with her three sisters, Willie Belle Milton, Maythel Averette, and Lavergne Cop, and brother Walter “Monk” Duff on the family farm on Duff Road in Walker, Livingston Parish, Louisiana. Upon graduation from high school, she was awarded a four-year scholarship to Louisiana State University. During World War II, Alice worked at the Army Depot where she met her future sister-in-law, who introduced her to her brother, Truett, upon his return from serving in the Army in Europe. After Truett’s graduation from LSU, they moved to Baytown in 1948.
Alice and Truett were soon members of First Baptist of Goose Creek, now Memorial Baptist. They were soon blessed with three sons, Curtis, Carl, and Gary. Alice was a stay-at-home mom, raising her children.
Alice was principled, consistent, insightful, kind, caring, and loving. She could be a bit stubborn and willful. Traits she shared with those around her and her children. She was a solid foundation and a steady course.
Alice was involved in the Baytown community throughout her life. She was a Cub Scout den mother, influencing the lives of the young boys passing through the program. She served many years in the Prison Ministry at Memorial. She was an active member of the Pilot Club serving in many offices, including President. She was known for her baking skills and her cakes and pies were always in demand. She also worked as a teacher’s aide at Carver Elementary in Baytown. Alice was consistently described as a sweet person by all she met.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Truett, her parents, and her brother and sisters. Alice is survived by her sons Curtis Smith and wife Mary Jane (Albuquerque, NM), Carl Smith and wife Mary (Knoxville, TN), and Gary Smith and wife Dana (Richmond, Texas).
