Sylvia Gass Brown

Sylvia Brown, a native and lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, died on January 12, 2014, shortly after a joyous celebration of 100 fabulous years. She was born December 9, 1913, and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in 1930 and attendedhttp://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/lsu/?personid=169082020&affiliateID=1382" id="InlineMicrositeLink_LSU" target="_blank" title="Visit LSU Memorial Site to see similar profiles">Louisiana State University. She was a member of St. Aloysius Church, was active in civic and social activities, and was a member of numerous clubs and social organizations, including board member of the Baton Rouge Opera Guild, Harness Club, Garden Growers Garden Club, The Women's Club, Home and Garden Club, numerous bridge clubs, and the Baton Rouge Assembly. During World War II she served as a Red Cross volunteer nurse's aide at the downtown Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, and continued her OLOL involvement by helping start the General Surgery Waiting Room program. She served as an OLOL volunteer for over 40 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Laura Gass; her beloved husband, C. Carter Brown; and a daughter, Barbara A. Brown. She is survived by her son, Carter G. Brown and wife Margaret Staples of Jackson, Mississippi; and a daughter, Ellen Brown Walsh and husband Douglas M. Walsh of Baton Rouge; a sister, Gloria Gass Lanius of Shreveport, La., and five granddaughters, Laura Brown Eatherly and husband Robert of Kansas City, Kansas, Brigette Brown of Dallas, Texas, Bari Brown Lord and husband Mark of Madison, Miss., Pamela Swinger Kirsch and husband Terry of Crowley, La., and Jennifer Swinger Joseph and husband Dr. Jeffrey Joseph of Lafayette, La. Also 12 great-grandchildren: Carter, Christian, Catherine and Caroline Eatherly; Andrea, Austin, Aryn Margaret and Ann Leyton Lord; and Clay, Collin, Carson and Anna Claire Kirsch; and one great-great-grandson, Walker Sims. Pallbearers will be her great-grandsons and great-nephew Chris Holeman. A heartfelt thanks goes to Michelle Mitchell, her housekeeper and friend, and all the loving and talented women who took care of her through her last years, including Tiffanny Mitchell, Donna Bailey, Sonya Wright, Geraldine Baranco and Joyce Batiste. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Vincent de Paul in Baton Rouge or any charity of choice. Services will be held at St. Aloysius Church on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. and Mass at 11:00. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.
