Stanley Atkinson WalshStanley Atkinson Walsh June 17, 1921 "“ June 18, 2016. Stanley has gone to be with his beloved wife Alva, who passed away in 2010 and to whom he was married for 64 years. He is survived by his son, Stanley A. Walsh II, of Baton Rouge, LA; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and David Marcus, of Germantown, MD.; and granddaughter, Erin Marcus, of Baltimore, MD. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, friend, and a character in his own right, and will be sadly missed. He attended University of Rochester in New York and served overseas in the Marines during WWII. He first met Alva, whom he called Doll, at Freeport Sulphur Co. where they both worked. Besides a long career as a chemical engineer at Freeport, he had an even longer history as a stamp collector and that continued from childhood to the present. In retirement, he got really busy: he grew veggies, pickled jalapenos, baked sourdough bread, did some fine woodworking, took work as a movie extra, learned to use a computer, volunteered on the USS KIDD, and continued as voting precinct captain until he was 90 years old. For many years, he was known as the Baton Rouge Turtle Man because of his large turtle habitat in the backyard; rescued turtles often just appeared in the habitat, dropped off by strangers. As a widower, he kept busy and active as long as he could. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital are appreciated. There will be a graveside service at Port Hudson National Cemetery Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 10:00am followed by a reception at Rabenhorst Funeral Home 11000 Florida Blvd. Baton Rouge, LA, Starting at 11:30am until 4:00pm.
