Sonya Leblanc Virgets passed away peacefully at her home on September 30, 2023. She was 91 years old. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Warren, in 2013. Sonya is survived by her sons Warren, Jr. and his spouse Anne, Eric, Flint and his spouse Chris, and her daughter Kristy and her spouse Shea Landry. She will be greatly missed by her 13 grandchildren - Warren, III and his spouse Natalie, Nicholas and his spouse Stephanie, Thomas and his spouse Mallory, Alex and her spouse John Casper, Quentin and his spouse Jessica, Alexa and her spouse Carlos PenaVega, Krizia, Makenzie and her spouse Blair Norfolk, Greylin, Jet, Cruz, Lann and Raine and her spouse Dr. Tyler Ball. Sonya is also survived by 14 Great Grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, her brothers Georges Leblanc Jr and spouse Jean, Terry Leblanc and spouse Barbara, sister in law Betty Leblanc, brother in law Thomas Virgets and long time friends Gloria, Theresa and Edwina. Sonya was born in Paincourtville in November 1931 and went on to attend Stephens College in Missouri, LSU and Columbia University in NYC post grad. In her later years she also earned her Masters in education. She taught at BR High and Istrouma but most of her 36 year career was spent at Sherwood Middle school in EBR. Many of her former students there will remember her for the letters she had them write to themselves in 8th grade, which she mailed to them upon their high school graduation. Before her career as a teacher began, Sonya was an athlete at LSU, serving on the dive team. She was chosen as the Darling of LSU then went on to become Miss Louisiana in 1953 while also appearing on local television and modeling. However, her greatest legacy is as a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and friend and her cherished traditions and crafts will be preserved in her memory. Sonya was preceded in death by her parents, Georges and Jewelle Leblanc, her in laws Nicholas and Atholyn Virgets, her brother James, her sisters in law Maxine Leblanc and Ankie Virgets, and Nettie and Lorraine Leblanc. She was a lifelong member of St. George Catholic Church. Special thanks to Kristy for her exceptional care for the past 10 years, along with her caregivers Helen, Lann (her first grandchild), Meethie, Sandra, Maida and Allison.
