Shirley Cavalier Rice died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, October 27, 2015. Shirley, born in New York City on July 19, 1930, moved with her parents to Greenville, South Carolina at the age of 5 where she lived for most of her life. She was a well-known local merchant and the owner of The Little Shop and S. Cavalier, LTD. Known to several generations of women simply as "Shirley," they depended on her advice and guidance to dress for everything from school to beauty pageants. She found true joy in helping others look their best. Although she could sell anyone anything, she would rather you leave her shop empty handed than with something that wasn't flattering. Shirley was an actress. At Greenville Senior High she acted with Joanne Woodward in school plays. Later, preforming in many productions at the Greenville Little Theater, she won several "Oscars" over the years for Best Supporting Actress. She was a loyal member of Congregation Beth Israel where she was active in the Sisterhood, serving a term as president. Shirley was also active in the National Council of Jewish Women. Shirley enjoyed many years of happiness with her second husband Ted Rice. They traveled the world together, collecting memories and taking hundreds of pictures. As her health declined, she moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she made new friends and became a member of Beth Shalom Synagogue. As long as her health permitted, one of her favorite activities was serving food at St. Vincent de Paul where she was a regular volunteer. Shirley Cavalier Rice is survived by her son Steven Cavalier and wife Deborah Shackleton Cavalier of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and son Craig Cavalier of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jennifer Cavalier, New York City, Zachary Cavalier, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Cody Cavalier and Cameron Cavalier of Houston, Texas, and one great granddaughter, Alice Davis Cavalier, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Charles and Charlotte Zaglin of Charleston, South Carolina. She is preceded in death by her ex-husband, Julius Cavalier, 2nd husband Ted Rice and parents Sol and Fannie Zaglin. Visitation will be Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East 11000 Florida Blvd. starting at 9:00am with service at 10:00am with graveside to follow at The Liberal Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael McCarthy for his understanding and compassionate care during her years in Baton Rouge, to the wonderful staff at Sunrise Assisted Living on Jefferson Highway and to the staff at St. Joseph's Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Beth Shalom Synagogue, 9111 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA, 70809 or Congregation Beth Israel, 425 Summit Drive, Greenville, SC, 29609.
