Shirley Mae Jarreau Dunbar was surrounded by loved ones when she went home to see Jesus on Tuesday, October 18, 2022. Born on April 29, 1932, to Mabel and Al Jarreau, Shirley was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is a graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy and attended LSU, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Winder Hart Dunbar, Sr. Shirley was full of life, and enamored everyone especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with her adventurous life stories all while sitting on the porch at her family retreat home at Lake Rosemound, in St. Francisville. Shirley’s biggest joy in life was traveling with her husband, spending time with her family, and hosting “family rosaries” at her home, where everyone who attended felt as though they were a part of her family. As a devout Catholic, Shirley was pillar member of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Women’s ministry of Magnificat, a member of the Catholic Charismatic Renewable Team of Baton Rouge, as well as the To Jesus through Mary prayer group of Baton Rouge. Shirley’s heart was abundantly generous and caring. Among her many donations, she and husband, W. Hart Dunbar donated a house to the Franciscans Missionaries of Our Lady Sisters (affiliated with Our Lady of the Lake Hospital) to use as a home to care for individuals suffering from HIV/AIDS. She is survived by her three children: Darlene Hart Dunbar (Richard) LaBorde of Baton Rouge, Noel Dunbar (Don) Tweedel of Ft. Walton Beach, FL., Winder Hart (Constance “Libby”) Dunbar, Jr. of Gonzales. She was a proud grandmother to: Adele Hilbun (Stan) Doiron, Alycia Hilbun (Monty) Bueche, Angela Hart Hilbun (Consecrated Woman of Regnum Christi), Kendall (Krista) Prestidge, Corbin (Becky) Prestidge, Tom Prestidge, Winder Emile “Ken” (Jacie) Dunbar and Constance Hart Dunbar (Jacob) Granier. Shirley was a Great-grandmother to Kailey Doiron, Nathan Doiron, Evan Bueche, Alex Prestidge, Kaiden Prestidge, Cohen Prestidge, Noah Prestidge, Ben Prestidge, Eli Prestidge, Maggie Prestidge, Kamille Dunbar, Mackey Dunbar, Jaxx Paredes, Colton Granier, and Jacob Paul Granier.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend visitation from 5pm to 8pm with a Rosary at 7pm, Monday, October 24, 2022, at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd. Visitation will resume at 10am Tuesday, October 25, 2022, until the 11am Funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 12424 Brogdon Lane, celebrated by Fr. Jeremy Lambert, L.C., Fr. Eamonn Shelly, L.C., and Fr. Kermit Syren, L.C. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Winder Hart Dunbar, Jr., Stan Doiron; Monty Glen Bueche; and Shirley’s grandsons, Kendall Prestidge, Corbin Prestidge, Tom Prestidge, Winder "Ken" Dunbar. Honorary pallbearers are Shirley’s great-grandsons. The family offers a heartfelt thank you to the staff and nurses of Ollie Steele Burden Manor and St. Joseph Hospice for their excellent care.
