"Died Thanksgiving day, November 23,2017, at The Carpenter House hospice. She was 92 years old. A native of Magnolia, Miss., she grew up in the home of her uncle W. W. Simmons in Cleveland, Miss. She had been a resident of Baton Rouge since 1949 except for three years when she and her husband lived in Athens, Ga. Graveside service will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park (4045 North St.) at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 2, officiated by the Rev. Patti Snyder. Survived by her son, Charles East, Jr., of Baton Rouge; her twin sister, Nan Simmons Muir and husband Dr. Eric Muir of Memphis, Tenn.; granddaughters, Rachel Anderson and husband Derek Anderson of Geismar, and Katie Bajon and husband Brian Bajon of New Orleans; four great-grandsons; her sister-in-law, Bess Simmons of McComb, Miss.; a niece; and five nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles East, Sr.; a brother, Dr. Bernell Simmons; and a niece and namesake, Sara Muir. A graduate of Mississippi University for Women, she worked for the Humble Oil Company in Houston and the Texas Oil Company in New Orleans and later New York before moving to Baton Rouge. She was business manager of the "Southern Review" at LSU from 1970 to 1980 and managing editor of the "Georgia Review" at the University of Georgia in the early 1980s. Memorial gifts may be made to the University Presbyterian Church.
