Richard Val Jahnke, 71, of Baton Rouge, peacefully passed away after a battle with cancer on Wednesday, January 8. He was born on July 5, 1942, in Houston, Texas. After graduating high school in 1960, Val attended Texas A & M University. He married Linda Thomas in 1970. Val proudly served as a U.S. Army medic in Vietnam where he received two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star and Army Commendation Medals. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 7286 and was actively involved in Baton Rouge Evening Lions Club where he became a Melvin Jones Fellow. He was preceded in death by parents Richard and Martha Jahnke and his brother Donald Jahnke. Val is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda; son Mark and daughter-in-law Renee, daughter Melissa and son-in-law Raymond, son James and daughter-in-law Angela, and daughter Jacquelyn; and grandchildren Brittany, Dylan, Noah, and Caleb. A viewing will be held between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 15 at Greenoaks funeral home on Florida Blvd.
