Nell Cowart McKenzie passed away peacefully at OLOL in Baton Rouge on Friday, February 14, 2014 at the age of 80. She was born on July 24, 1933 in Lumberton, MS. She met her husband, Robert William "Bob" McKenzie, in August 1950 and was married on November 25, 1953. She graduated from LSU with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education in 1954. She traveled with her husband who served in the Navy to Port Hueneme, California and Adak, Alaska. They settled in Baton Rouge in January of 1958, where they raised their three children. She was a loving, generous, and honorable woman of faith, who adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was active at University United Methodist Church and the AJ Chapter of P.E.O. She was an avid fan of LSU baseball and football. She is survived by her three children, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" McKenzie Hebert and her husband John Wayne Hebert of Humble, Texas, Robert William "Bobby" McKenzie, Jr. and his wife Susan Ann Hughes McKenzie of Maurepas, Louisiana, and Barbara Ann McKenzie Elkins and her husband Brian Lane Elkins, Sr. of Alexandria, Louisiana; nine grandchildren, Emily Rose Vincent, Heather Ann McKenzie Whitaker and her husband Michael Wayne Whitaker, Michelle Marie McKenzie DeBenedetto and her husband Rocco Daniel DeBenedetto, Rachel Leigh Hebert, Kristen Elizabeth McKenzie Elliott and her husband Derek Paul Elliott, and Brian Lane "BJ" Elkins, Jr., Mckenzie Kathryn Elkins, Marshall Robert Elkins, and Faith Baoben Elkins; three great-grandchildren, Bobby Michael Whitaker, Jesse Clay Whitaker, Rocco Daniel DeBenedetto, Jr., and on the way, Lindsly Ann DeBenedetto. Nell was preceded in death by her husband Robert William "Bob" McKenzie, Sr.; her parents, Lee L. Cowart and Iris Atwood Cowart; grandson, William Joseph "Will" Vincent. Pallbearers will be Mac Rushing, Jim Marshall, Mike Whitaker, Rocco DeBenedetto, Derek Elliott, BJ Elkins, and Marshall Elkins. Visitation will be Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Boulevard, Baton Rouge, LA from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday, February 17, 2014 at University United Methodist Church at 3350 Dalrymple Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70802 at 10 a.m. followed by funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to University United Methodist Church.
