Maxine Smith Calcote, native of Brookhaven, MS and longtime resident of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away at Lake Sherwood Village on November 29, 2022 at the age of 91. Maxine was the matriarch of her family and was very loved and cared for by them. She will be greatly missed. Maxine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Christian, and friend. She was very outgoing and easily made friends wherever she went. If you were a friend of hers, you had a Friend indeed. She was a Health Claims Insurance Supervisor and retired from Blue Cross after many years of service. Maxine was a faithful member of NBR Methodist Church and later Jefferson United Methodist Church and also participated in the Heifer Project and Angola Ministries. She enjoyed gardening, singing in the church choir, along with singing and performing in the Baton Rouge Chorus, and volunteering for her church. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Jimmy Boyd Calcote; daughter, Cynthia Calcote; parents, George Washington Smith, Jr. and Lavada Buff Smith Russell; siblings, G.W. “Son” Smith, Sybil Smith, Aubrey L. Smith, Annie Pearl Smith, and Sallie Pauline Smith Rollins. She is survived by her children, Melisa Calcote (Mark), and Jimmy G. Calcote and wife Nancy; grandchildren, Aprille Calcote Wright (Bryan), James Brian Calcote (Kimmie), Diana Calcote Albarado (Adam); great grandchildren, Cameron Wright, Parker Wright, Annabelle Calcote, James Calcote, Mark Albarado, Michael Calcote, Amelia Wright, and Brennan Calcote. Maxine loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family. She also loved her church family, especially participating in choir activities. In more recent times she enjoyed seasonal and social activities with the wonderful friends she made while residing at the Lake Sherwood Village Retirement Center. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Hospital, The Baton Rouge Food Banks, or your favorite charity. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 from 9 am until funeral service at 12 noon. Burial will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park and a reception to follow.
