On July 3, 2021, Mary Alaveen Harp Whittington, at the age of 92, heard Jesus whisper in her ear, “Well done thy good and faithful servant, it is time for you to come home.” Born in El Dorado, AR, on January 7, 1929, she resided in the Baton Rouge/Central area for over 80 years where she fell in love and married Emil W. Whittington on July 7, 1946 to whom she was devoted to for 59 years until his death in 2005. Together they raised 3 children. A daughter, Denise Ann Whittington, deceased, and two sons, Ralph Emile Whittington and wife Jettie residing in Holden, LA, and Rodney Alan Whittington, residing in Wildwood, GA.
She is also survived by brothers James Harp Sr. residing in Maurepas, LA; Ted Harp Sr. and wife Christel residing in Dallas, TX; and sister Dorothy Cox and husband Randy residing in Baton Rouge, LA; grandchildren Rodney Whittington Jr. and wife Mandy; Brooke Whittington; Misty Whittington Newton and husband Rob; Grace Whittington Hatfield and husband Michael; Mikel Whittington; Trestin Slack and husband Jared; Chase Whittington and wife Kaila; great grandchildren Derrell Thomas III; Carrie Thomas Moore and husband Donald; Dillon Silverthorne, Will and Sam Newton and Kirsten Prewitt; Bently and Bren-lea Whittington; Cameron Whittington, 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Her smile will be sorely missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her father Marvin Harp, mother Aletha Darden Harp, a brother Noel Harp, a daughter Denise Ann Whittington, and granddaughter Carrie Ann Whittington.
She was totally committed to her family and friends with complete devotion to God, always seeking to glorify Him first by seeking His guidance every day of her life. This commitment guided her in the early 60s to help establish, nurture and support the founding of Baker Church of Christ in Baker, LA. At her passing she was fellowshipping and worshiping at Comite Church of Christ in Central, LA. She also answered God’s calling to servitude at Lane Memorial Hospital in Zachary, LA serving many years as a volunteer with the Auxillary Volunteers “Pink Ladies” group there. She also immensely enjoyed working with the Baton Rouge Garden Club. As an avid LSU Tiger fan she never missed following an LSU sports event.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA, 70815 from 9 - 11 am with funeral services from 11 to noon. Interment will immediately follow at Green Oaks Memorial Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside the love of her life.
Serving as pallbearers are Ted Harp Sr., James Harp Sr., Dillon Siverthorne, Sam Newton, Rodney Whittington Jr. and Chase Whittington.
