Lois Maurin Abadie slipped away peacefully into the Lord’s embrace near her loving family in prayer on November 7, 2024 at the age of 95. She was born on January 15, 1929 in Reserve, LA, the fourth child of Horace C. And Rosa Maurin. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sister; husband, Leo G. Abadie, Sr. and daughter-in-law, Linda Richard Abadie.
Lois attended St. Peter’s Elementary School in Reserve where she was educated by the Dominican Sisters who contributed greatly to her deep, rich Catholic faith. Upon graduating from Leon Godchaux High School she entered Southwestern Louisiana Institute (USL, ULL) graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Secondary Education. Lois taught for two years at Leon Godchaux High School where she also coached the girl’s volleyball and basketball teams.
Her life began to change when she was, as they used to say, “heavily courted” by the handsome and delightful Leo Abadie. The love of each other’s lives, they were soon engaged, married in 1952, and moved to Baton Rouge to spend their long happy life together for 65 years, beautifully raising their family of five.
Leo and Lois were early members of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church under one of its first pastors, Father Louis Marionneaux. Their worship, dedication and involvement there spanned 65 years. Lois served on many Rosary and Prayer Request Groups. She set an outstanding example to her family by her weekly, hourly commitment to Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration for 30 years.
Lois was a dedicated loving wife and mother. Her family members were the lucky recipients of her delicious, home cooked meals served nightly at their large round kitchen table. Her joy of baking led her to test new cake recipes served with afternoon coffee. Welcoming guests around the kitchen table to enjoy this delicious fare, Lois also listened sincerely and lovingly to numerous friends and family members as they would share their joys, trials and tribulations which she kept close to her heart and in her prayers.
A much enjoyed hobby was gardening, carefully choosing and tending to her plants and flowers. Lois was modest, but once she was awarded the Tara Subdivision Yard of the Month.
Her family will miss Lois’s roast beef, rice and gravy, panéed meat, pecan tassies, red rice, baked chicken, and Mississippi mud pie . Her unfailing attendance at her grandchildren’s sacraments, birthdays, and graduations will be fondly remembered. And her enthusiastic Christmas spirit was something to behold! But most of all they will miss Lois’s love, affection, motherly sacrifices, and smile.
Lois is survived by her children, JoEllyn A. Gallmann (Bill), of Baton Rouge, Leo G. Abadie Jr. (Charise) of Reddick, Florida, Jean A. Dugas (Robert) of Lincoln, Nebraska, Chris Abadie (Jill) of Baton Rouge, and Carolyn A. Landry (Richard) of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Heather G. Strittmatter, MD, Amy G. Balelo (Andrew), William H.
