Leah S. Guerry passed peacefully in her sleep at her home in Baton Rouge on February 25, 2023 after a brief illness. Born May 21, 1933, in Longview Texas; she is preceded in death by her parents James Newton Saye and Leah Wells Saye, a sister Sarah Shelby, and her husband Jack Edwin Guerry. She is survived by her son David, daughter-in-law Lizabeth, grandsons Matthew and Michael, granddaughter-in-law Kristen, great-grandson Miles, and daughter Madeline. A trailblazer for women in law, she graduated from SMU Law School in 1953 at the age of 20. She clerked for the Texas Supreme Court and was the long-time executive director of the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association (now LAJ). Among a lifetime full of honors and awards too many to mention, her proudest achievement was reception of the Louisiana Democratic Party’s Lifetime Achievement Award. A visitation will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street, Baton Rouge, La. 70802 on Friday March 3, 2023, from 9:00am – 12:00pm. Services will be private. The family wishes to extend special thanks to her talented caregivers Cathy, Abby, Wendy, Carla and Deda. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to St Luke’s Episcopal Church, or a charity of your choice.
