Joy Christian Lain, age 92, loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to all who knew her, passed away peacefully among family and friends on April 11, 2016, at the Carpenter House in Baton Rouge. Born March 28, 1924, Joy grew up in Opelousas where she graduated from Opelousas High School. She attended LSU on a music scholarship where she earned her BA in Music and lived out her life in Baton Rouge. While her husband Jim was honorably serving his country during the Korean Conflict, Joy, a young war bride, began working as a piano teacher for Jack O'Neill, founder of O'Neill's Music House, at his first location in Baton Rouge. Joy continued to teach private piano lessons in her home for over 40 years until her retirement. Affectionately known as "Mimi" to her grandchildren, Joy loved music, sewing, being with family and actively participating in many music and historical organizations in Baton Rouge. She was a member of the LSU Sigma Chapter of Delta Zeta and served on its House Building Committee as an active alum. Joy was a member and past treasurer of the Music Club of Baton Rouge and a member of the Philharmonic of Baton Rouge and the Baton Rouge Music Teachers Association. She was also a member of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the DAR, the PEO Sisterhood and the Lorraine Chapter of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Lain is survived by a daughter Christie Lain Cloy and husband Richard; two grandsons, Lain Cloy and wife Amber and Reid Cloy and wife Lauren, of Keller, Texas; great grandchildren, Addyson, Cason, Auldon, and Griffin Cloy and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, James, "Jim", Murry Lain, Jr.; father, Errol Pete Christian; mother, Margaret Lorena Higginbotham Christian and brother, Dr. Percy Herbert Christian. For their loving care, counsel and support, the family would like to thank the staff and friends of the Williamsburg Retirement Center; family friend, Dr. Douglas Davidson; Dr. Douglas Say and his nurses Vera and Heidi and her nephew, Dr. Kenneth Gaddis. Pallbearers will be Lain Cloy, Reid Cloy, Clint Cloy, Dr. Van Christian, Dr. Douglas Davidson and Dr. Kenneth Gaddis. Visitation will be Friday, April 15, 2016, 11:00am - 1:00 pm at Rabenhorst East Funeral Home, 11000 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA. Service will follow at 1:00 pm, conducted by Reverend Ken Carroll of Broadmoor United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, please remember Joy's love of music and her church through contributions to the Music Ministries of Broadmoor United Methodist Church or First United Methodist Church of Baton Rouge.
