Joseph Joyce Hidalgo, Jr., affectionately known as "Jay" and "Paw Paw Jay," entered his heavenly home on Monday, May 19, 2014, at St. Clare Manor in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Jay was born on June 15, 1929, in New Orleans, grew up in the St. Rose-Destrehan area as a young child, and later moved to the Baton Rouge area where he met and married his sweetheart and the love of his life, Ruthie Elaine Poirier. He was a graduate of Catholic High School, a pilot in the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Air Squadron under former Sheriff Bryan Clemmons' command, and an East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Deputy in the Civil Division under Sheriff Clemmons. Jay was also a retired shift supervisor with 36 years of service at Copolymer and was a longtime active member in the Knights of Columbus organizations affiliated with his church parishes of St Gerard Majella and St. Charles Borromeo. Jay and Ruthie enjoyed fishing and hunting together, traveling in their motor home, and were avid fans of LSU football, baseball, and basketball. A loving parent and grandparent to his 5 children , 12 grandchildren , 25 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, Jay was a perfect example of love and security for his family. He is survived by his children: son, Edwin Dale Hidalgo, Sr. and wife , Jeanette ; three daughters, Debra Daves and husband Drift Daves, Sr.; Vivian Bossier and husband , John Bossier, Sr.; and Brenda Sturgeon and husband, Fred Sturgeon; a sister, Nona Hidalgo George; and a sister-in-law, Helen "Shug" Hidalgo. He was most proud of his 12 grandchildren: Shelley Hidalgo Fenchock, Holly Hidalgo Green, Edwin Dale "Beau" Hidalgo, Jr., Shannon Daves Cummings, Monica Daves Simonsen, Drift Daves, Jr., Mikki Daves Parnell, Laurie Lilly Burke, John Bossier, Jr., Jenee Bossier Bourgeois, Julie Bossier Talbot , and Jason Bossier. He was "PawPaw Jay" to 25 great-grandchildren: Katelyn Fenchock, Jessica Fenchock, Emily Green, Jack Green, Will Green, Ashley Hidalgo, Erika Hidalgo, Angelina "GiGi" Hidalgo, Wyatt Hidalgo, Clay Simonsen, Alex Simonsen, Riland Daves, Suvannah Daves, Slae Leonard, Joslyn Parnell, Drew Parnell, Megan Burke, Gabrielle Burke, Jackson Bourgeois, Anna James Bourgeois, Sloane Bourgeois, Landon Talbot, Lillian Talbot, Elise Talbot, and Eleanor Bossier; and great-great grandchild, Jace Carson Fenchock. Jay was preceded in death by his wife, Ruthie Poirier Hidalgo; parents, Joseph and Vivian Lorio Hidalgo; sister, Jackie Hidalgo Powers; brother, Kenneth Hidalgo; and son, Jay Francis Hidalgo. Visitation will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Boulevard on Sunday, May 25, 2014, from 5-9 pm. Visitation will resume on Monday, May 26, 2014, at St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church from 9 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. celebrated by Rev. Matthew Bonk.
